The Living Thing

What am I up to here?

Welcome to the place where I send people who wish to know what I spend all that time in front of the computer for.

Précis

I am interested in the application of state-of-the-art modelling techniques to understanding human behaviour, because I think that it is useful to the world, to me. Specifically, I’m interested in applying techniques of Agent based models to understanding economics.

Economics, after all is “the science which studies human behaviour as a relationship between ends and scarce means”. As I write this, scarcity is something we have in abundance.

Moreover, human behaviour is fascinating. How do the feeble aggregates of instinct and happenstance that are individual human beings organise skyscrapers, philosophies, wars, epic poems, and technology?

I don’t know, but I think economics, however feeble its track record, has made at least some progress towards nutting that question out, on a large scale. Few disciplines have its success in being predictive. (Consider linguistics, certain human geography, neuroscience for some other contenders.)

Only economics?

Not only economics. I’m also interested in a great number of other application of the studies of emergent behaviour; I’m interested in applying these techniques to music, design, and - why not? - philosophy? But when it comes to art, I usually to do it more than write about it, so you won’t find so much of that here. Most of my music involves algorithmic composition, though. Have a listen.

But what do you actually DO?

Steady on, I’ve only just started. See Projects for a list of projects I’m doing toward this goal.
